The area of southern Dobrogea is crossed by a lot of dirt or macadam roads. Some are agricultural roads, others are maintenance roads for irrigation canals, others are connecting roads between various villages or monasteries. Thus the possibilities of riding outside the asphalt are endless.
Last summer, in August, we did a route of almost 30km between Rasova, until near the village of Ion Corvin. We partially went on the route of the V4Rally Raid 2020 Dobrogea (https://4vrallyraid.com/), partially on roads we chose.
We left the Danube shore, near Rasova, and ridend on the North shore of Lake Baciu. Then along an irrigation canal to an abandoned pumping station. Here there was a whole system of irrigation canals and pumping stations that carried water from the Danube. It lifted the water even 90m above to irrigate vast farms. Now, unfortunately, the system is abandoned. If you want you can play a little on the concrete slopes of the irrigation canal, they can be used as a kind of half-pipe.
From the pumping station we will pass on the opposite bank of the canal and after riding a little along it, we will turn right on the road that enters through a valley. After a few hundred meters, at an intersection, we will take the road that goes up to the right. At the top of this hill is another pumping station. If you want to get right to its base, to take pictures, there is a place where you can enter the canal. This place is on the left after the climb up the hill.
Immediately after the pumping station we will enter a grove. At the exit of the forest we turn left and ride a few hundred meters past the tree line. Then we turn right and ride for a while past the forest we just crossed. After a portion through some fields, we will have a short descent through some trees that might cause you some problems because the road is covered with a very thick layer of fine dust and the motorcycle skids. At the base of the hill we will turn right then after a few kilometers we will cross a road and we will take it to the left.
After passing through a small farm, the road enters a valley through some rocky hills. Here we chose to take the road that goes up to the left. You can go ahead because the roads meet again.
We reach a spring, turn right and then climb the hill in front. This is a slightly more technical area of this route but it is not very difficult. After reaching the top we will have two more sections of forest, then after a smooth descent we will reach the asphalt on DN3, near Ion Corvin.
Almost all the length of the road is with dirt and a lot of dust. Some gravel is only found on short sections, in the area with the rocky hills I was talking about. The degree of difficulty is low but it is likely that if it has rained and it’s muddy it becomes extremely difficult to ride it.
