The extinct volcano from Racoș is a unique place in the heart of Transylvania. I didn’t know about this place because I had learned at school that the only extinct volcano in Romania is the one near Tusnad in the crater of which Sfânta Ana Lake was formed. So I was surprised to find out that there was one more. In Racoș, in addition to the former crater, there are other interesting geological formations: Emerald Lake and the basalt columns. The place is quite attractive for off-road enthusiasts because there are many unpaved roads in the area that are worth exploring.
Next we will tell you what the road from Racoș to Augustin is like on the left bank of the Olt. To enter this road you will have to exit Racoș to the West. Then after about 2 km there is a road to the left to the village of Mateiaș. We cross the railway and after crossing the Olt we turn left again. From here begins the unpaved road. The first part is a bit busier, especially with trucks because there is a stone quarry nearby.
The road is relatively flat, with no level differences. In the middle of the distance to Augustine there are some narrower curves and a small climb then descends again on the river bank.
What we liked about this road is the fact that there are many areas where very large puddles form, which occupy the entire width of the road. It is very fun to go through them quickly, especially after you realize that the grip is quite good and not much mud is formed on the bottom of the ponds.
We will reach the asphalt immediately after entering the village of Augustin. Along the way there are about 2 or 3 intersections with other dirt roads. We will keep the road to the left all the time but it is tempting to explore these roads as well.
