OFF77-Bihor Peak

One of the few mountain peaks in Romania that can be accessed by road is Bihor Peak, also known as Curcubăta Mare Peak. From what we saw, there are 3 roads that reach the top. There is also a 4th one, the one from the north, which looks more like a path so we didn’t research it. The one that climbs from the west is quite difficult for an adventure motorcycle, so we will present you the 2 climbing options from the east.

We start the route from Cârțulești and climb the comunall road 261 which is paved. It is easier to follow the sign to the “La Americanu” restaurant. After a climb on the paved road and a few serpentines, we reach a “Y” intersection. Right from the intersection, an unpaved road starts. This one goes straight up the hill towards the wind turbines. We will have to enter this one. This is where the route begins.

After a relatively normal  climb, there is about a kilometer of quite steep climb. Here you have to be prepared and under no circumstances let go of the gas. If you have more experience, go in 2nd gear, if not, I recommend that you approach the climb in 1st gear with the gas open to the maximum. The road is not very uneven, so if you maintain a constant speed, you should be able to climb without problems.

If you pass this climb, it means that you have passed the most difficult part of the route. You leave the forest and arrive in the alpine valley in the area of ​​the wind turbines near the Curcubăta Mică peak. From here the road becomes a little less steep but there are a lot more stones. This is because here we enter the road used to access the wind turbines.

It’s not long until Curcubăta Mare. We reach the intersection with the road coming from Arieșeni and from here there are a few hundred meters and we arrive up near the weather station.

Bihor Peak is a little higher at 1849m altitude.

From here we have a 360-degree panorama. We can see Mount Găina to the south and the Curcubăta Mică peak. To the west we can see the road we were talking about at the beginning and to the north we can see another road that could be used to climb here but you probably need a light enduro motorcycle.

The descent to Arieseni should not cause you any problems. It is a well-paved forest road, without large slopes. It is quite well maintained and quite wide. If you are a beginner, the climb from Arieseni is the best option to access this peak.
