In the Harghita mountains, at 1600m altitude there is a small ski area near the Mădăraș chalet. It is accessible via 2 roads. One from the North-West, from Lake Zetea and the village of Izvoare. This one is paved. The second access road is an unpaved road that climbs from Vlăhița village. We will tell you more about this one below.
Coming on DN 13A, in the center of Vlăhița village you have to be careful because there is a small sign that points to Harghita Mădăraș. The village is quite large and after a few intersections where we will follow the main road we reach the exit of the village. This is where the asphalt ends. We will advance straight towards the mountains through a relatively flat area. Slowly, we climb and enter a wide valley. The road narrows and becomes slightly more crooked.
Then we reach a hairpin, the road turns left and begins to climb steeper. After about 2 km and 2 more hairpins we will reach a place where we have a spectacular view of the valley we came from.
From here we have to climb a few more kilometers and we will reach the top. There are a few guesthouses here and some of them offer really good food. We ate at Pethő Panzió (http://pensiuneapetho.ro/), and we were satisfied. The view from up here is gorgeous.
The road is relatively easy, it is just right for beginners because it does not have large bumps, but it also has some steeper ascent areas with lower grip.
