The spectacular road begins immediately after the exit from Drobeta Turnu Severin, in Gura Văii. On the right side, we can admire the Iron Gates dam. Although the altitude is quite small (just over 100m), it looks like we are in the mountains with huge limestone cliffs everywhere. The road practically follows the Danube bank except for a few short segments after Orșova.
Between Drobeta and Orșova, after the Iron Gates, the road crosses a first tunnel, then a few viaducts, then another tunnel, and so on till we arrive in Orșova. Once we enter Orșova, we leave the national road 6 and enter DN57 towards Moldova Noua.
The next segment is the most spectacular part of the route: “Cazanele Mici” (Small Boilers) and “Cazanele Mari” (Large Boilers) of the Danube. Here is the area where the Danube crosses the Banat Mountains and reaches its smallest width on the territory of Romania: 180m. Immediately after Eselnita, on the right side, in Mraconia Bay, we can admire the statue with Decebal’s face.
There is an area where the road is a bit far away from the Danube and we have a few more curves, then after a few kilometers we return on the Danube bank and from here we follow it all the way to the exit from the Gorge, near Moldova Nouă.
The road has generally good asphalt, there are several areas without asphalt but very shirt and insignificant. The road is a succession of straight lines interspersed with large curves, which gives us quite a pleasant piloting experience. It is very good that most of the time the road is very free, I went on a weekend and I think I met the 100km about 50 cars in total.
